Twenty five years

By accident, for 25 years.

My seat: the translator. The people were always my part.

Six years ago, in a job interview

"To do what, Ho?"

Interviewer, question threeWhat is your career aspiration?

MeI want to retire early.

Interviewer, later a good friendTo do what, Ho?

MeNow that is a good question. I want to work with children. Nine months to thirty months old.

My wife, years earlierWhen you are retired, or no longer dependent on a monthly income, you can become a positive influence on an audience who will never remember you.

That was the dream. Servant leadership, with nursery rhymes.

Still a goal. It may look a little different now, given what I started this year.

And the realityA family of four, and a monthly paycheque to keep.

What held me, in my own words

Four voices in my head.

Who on earth is going to pay for this? Safe is comfortable. Why risk it? You are not qualified. Go and get qualified. I feel that I am not very able.

Moneyand who pays

Be honest with myself about money. How long can I go without an income? Then decide.

RiskI avoided it for 25 years

Name the worst case. I can always go back to what I was doing before.

Qualificationmy best friend's question

25 years with the people who live with the change.

Making a start is 50% of the job.

Three things changed in me.

One

I said it out loud. People threw themselves over me.

BeforeA roadmap first, then I can plan

NowSet the direction. Learn as I walk.

It feels like wearing somebody else's clothes. Only I can change that.

Three

BeforeI need to define a product, and its value add

NowI already had one. 25 years of it.

I am selling my character. That is enough.

Be clear with yourself

Talent. Abilities. Calling and purpose.

Refine the idea

Talk. Trim. Expand. Plan. Advisors who tell you what you don't want to hear.

Go.

Plan B is unnecessary. If plan A fails, make another plan A. Plan B always exists: back to before.
